Exclamation 1984-93 Saleen Mustang Racing Cars

We are creating this thread to highlight competition Mustangs (from 1984-93) that raced as "Saleen Mustangs" in both professional and amature motorsports series.

This thread will review the Mustangs that raced under the "SALEEN" corporate banner. When possible and appropriate these Mustangs will be referenced as "factory team cars."

We will also use this thread to document "street serialized" Saleen Mustangs that were converted into competition vehicles by private individuals.

Lastly, with participant assistance, this thread will also review those Mustangs that were not serialized by Saleen, but competed with Saleen parts, Saleen support, and/or for vehicles that used the "Saleen Mustang" as a spec template vehicle in order to run a modified Mustang in SCCA, NHRA, IHRA etc.

Default 1984 Saleen Mustang TA racer

1984 Saleen Mustang SCCA Trans-Am racer.

This would be the first racing car to wear Saleen company branding. This vehicle debuted at Sears Point Raceway in June 1984. Vehicle was crashed during the pace lap and earned a DNF. Car was rebuilt and then used for Saleen Autosport media / sales photos.

Rumor: Word is this was originally a Mercury Capri TA chassis that was re-styled into a Ford Mustang.

Default 85-0049r

The first Saleen Mustang showroom stock-style race car.

85-0049R is a black 5-liter LX hatchback, with grey GT seating, out-fitted with power equipment and the typical Ford options seen on 1985 Saleen Mustang street car chassis.

This vehicle competed around the western region as a 1985 Ford Mustang LX in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk showroom stock series.

Following competition, car was then outfitted with the exterior Saleen aero package during retirement and was eventually used for early General Tire media promotions leading into 1986.

A year later, this vehicle would then gain the new-for-1987 Ford Mustang LX front bumper cover, light assemblies and hood. This cosmetic update took place to mock-up the new-for-1987 General Tire Motorsports team colors and paint scheme. Photos of this "concept" were also used in media and sponsor promotions during the 1987 racing season.

Announcement 1986 Saleen Mustang Competition Builds

For 1986, Saleen Autosport had two competition Mustangs built for the SCCA Showroom Stock Escort Endurance Series. These Mustangs were sponsored by General Tire and debuted the "Saleen Mustang" package to organized wheel-to-wheel racing.

Unlike the sanctioning body known as IMSA, the SCCA was willing to approve and recognize these enhanced Ford Mustangs into their racing events.

Also of note, Saleen Autosport approved of one customer order "R" vehicle near the end of 1986 vehicle production.

1986 Competition Models:

Default Bayley Motorsports Mustang - 1986 Mustang GT / Saleen Mustang

Believed to have been raced by Bayley Motorsports with sponsorship from Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor, MI.

This vehicle began life and a 1986 Oxford White, grey interior, Mustang GT and was prepared for the IMSA Firehawk series. Partway through the 1986 season, this Mustang was upgraded with Saleen components and switched racing venues into the SCCA Endurance Series.

Vehicle was possibly prepared by Reghan Racing, also of Michigan.

Default 1987 Saleen Mustang Competition Builds

1987 was the first year for the "full" Saleen conversion to a Ford Mustang. Key ingredients include a four-wheel disc brake upgrade and 5-lug wheels/axles.

For 1987 Saleen Autosport had constructed three factory team cars for competition in the SCCA Endurance Series. These new yellow, black, white Mustangs proudly wore their General Tire Motorsports livery.

Unique cosmetic feature: 1987 Saleen team cars ran black door handles and deleted LX cosmetic side trim.

In addition to these three factory team cars, Saleen Autosport also recognized the creation of three additional "R" designated production Mustangs.

87-0011R
87-0019R

Default 87-0009r

This was the first 1987 competition Saleen Mustang constructed. It debuted as 87-0019R. Prior to the 1987 racing season, this vehicle was photographed for media and promo use.

Of the three 1987 Saleen team cars, 87-0009R was the lone example to feature door numbers similar to the 1986 team cars (but smaller). This vehicle also featured an exterior paint treatment that placed the black accent stripe above the rear fender lip.

Vehicle was dismantled after 1987 race season.

Car #09 was built on a low option 5-liter LX with grey interior and retained the LX rear seating and door panels.

Default 87-0020r

This was the second of three 1987 Saleen team cars constructed. 87-0020R began the season with #09 (#19).

Number 20 might be the most photographed and "seen" 1987 through 1989 Saleen team car. After the successful, championship season of '87, #20 was given a cosmetic refresh by Saleen for use as a promotional and tour vehicle

In 1988 or 1989, if you were attending a trade show, a tire store grand opening, a Montgomery Ward weekend extravaganza or simply saw a Saleen Autosport merchandise booth with a "19" race car on display... this was probably the car you spied.

Given how this vehicle was repurposed for display use, number 20 is the lone competition Saleen team car to have a "show car" style paint treatment. Meaning these tri-colors are going through / around the door jams. This vehicle had it "low" black stripe re-painted higher... much like 87-0009R and the later 1988 and 1989 team cars.

For 1988, 87-0020R was given a the '88 spec rear valance, 5-spoke ARE wheels, and a unique version of 1988 sponsor decals.

For 1989, the exterior decals were once again updated and were unique to this vehicle.

Car #20 was built on a low option 5-liter LX with grey interior and retained the LX rear seating and door panels.

This was the second "19" team car produced for the 1987 racing season.

Number "19" #2 was introduced late(r) in the season as a replacement for the crashed 87-0009R.

This vehicle would feature similar paint and decal treatment to number "20."

Car #19 was built on a low option 5-liter LX with grey interior and retained the LX rear seating and door panels.

Default 87-0029r

This Scarlet Red Saleen Mustang hatchback with grey interior was constructed for J. Bittle... of J. Bittle American (JBA) fame.

J. Bittle operated the Saleen Autosport High-Performance Parts business out of San Diego. 87-0029R is primarily a street car with "R" designation. Number "29" was used as a test bed for various JBA and Ford Motorsport equipment.

In period, this Mustang was featured in numerous "how-to" and "shoot-out" articles for various magazine publications.

As time marched on, number 29 lost more and more of it's Saleen equipment and look.

Of note, number 29 was used for a 1988 Champion Battery advertising campaign. The red Saleen Mustang used as a mock Champion Battery sponsored showroom stock-style race car is believed to have been this car.

Rumor: J. Bittle chose #29 for his Saleen Mustang since it was "one more" than Z28.

This Charcoal Grey exterior, grey interior Saleen Mustang was purchased new by a Track Time driving instructor.

Number "39" is believed to have been a regular production street car that was given an "R" designation after purchase.

Default 1988 Saleen Mustang Competition Builds

1988 saw an expansion for both Saleen Autosport and for their street car business.

During 1988 Saleen Autosport constructed four factory team cars for competition in the SCCA Endurance Series. These would be the lone "R" designated vehicles from Saleen for the model year.

Unique cosmetic feature: 1988 Saleen team cars ran yellow door handles and retained LX cosmetic side trim.

It's believed three of the four competition vehicles were constructed from new, low option, 5-liter LX hatchbacks. One of the four was a body-in-white.

Speculation implies parts / equipment from the dismantled 87-0009R may of helped to construct this four car race team of 1988.

88-0009R
88-0019R
88-0020R

Sometimes known as the "spare car" or "back-up" car.

Number "09" is a full competition 1988 model. This vehicle would join 87-0020R in doing promotions and marketing for Saleen Autosport and General Tire wearing exterior "19" number decals.

Like it's 1987 sibling, number 09 was also updated with a unique set of 1989 exterior sponsor decals for tour and display duty.

In 1989, during a 25-years of Mustangs event in Michigan, it's believed number 09 made an appearance to represent Saleen Autosport.

Car #09 was built on a low option 5-liter LX with grey interior and retained the LX rear seating and door panels.

Default Popular Mechanics 1988 LX

Raced by Popular Mechanics Magazine in the 1988 season of the IMSA Firestone Firehawk Series.

This vehicle was not a Saleen Mustang, but received technical assistance and minor parts support from Saleen Autosport. (The Saleen Mustang package was not approved for IMSA competition.)

Began life as a Cabernet Red, tan interior 1988 LX hatchback that was sold to PM Magazine as a "dollar car" from the Ford Motor Company Press Pool.

This vehicle would win the 1988 Longest Day at Nelson Ledges endurance event.

The following year, this Mustang was repainted solid black and refreshed for entry into the 1989 season SCCA Escort Endurance Series.

Default 89-0259 - Race Paint

This 1989 street model was ordered for promotional display by an east coast Ford dealer.

Vehicle was equipped with all standard Ford options for 1989 Saleen Mustang. Meaning: Power windows, Power locks, Power mirrors, A/C, Cruise control, Tinted glass, etc.

Unique features are the AutoPower roll cage, Fire suppression system Mod-plastia drivers seat, Window net, etc.

Number "259" was the lone "race paint" street build to feature full exterior lettering and sponsor decals.

Even though this is a 1989 model year Mustang, it was lettered similar to a 1988 promo competition vehicle.

Similar to the 1987 competition vehicles, this race paint street car deleted the LX side trim.

Note: This is not a competition vehicle.

Default 89-0309 - Race Paint

This 1989 street model was the second General Tire race paint street model assembled for the year.

Number "309" was the first of three 1989, race paint, no exterior graphics produced.

These race paint street cars feature a unique paint treatment that allows for continuous application of the black accent stripes around the front of vehicle. Since they do not have the "SALEEN MUSTANG" branding callout on the front bumper cover like competition vehicles have.

Similar to the 1987 competition vehicles, this race paint street car deleted the LX side trim.

Note: This is not a competition vehicle.

Rumor: Word is this Mustang was stolen, dismantled and was never recovered.

Default 1989 SSC clone by Saleen Performance Parts - Long Beach

Believed to have been earmarked to possibly become the third 1989 Saleen / General Tire SCCA Endurance Series team car.

Ford VIN places this vehicle with the other two 1989 team cars in a batch of Oxford White LX hatchbacks that were received by Saleen Autosport.

Saleen Performance Parts outfitted this chassis with numerous SSC features and attempted to serialize this vehicle as 89-0007SSC.

Rumor: This 1989 Mustang chassis was procured by Long Beach Motoring Accessories either by-way-of the Saleen Performance Parts business or through an arranged payment for supplying 1989 model year interior components.

Default Popular Mechanics 1989 LX / Saleen Mustang / Saleen SSC

Raced by Popular Mechanics Magazine in the 1989 season of the SCCA Escort Endurance Series.

After an impressive 1988 effort, Ford Motor Company offered their continued support for 1989.

This vehicle began life as an Oxford White, scarlet interior 1989 LX hatchback that was sold to PM Magazine as a "dollar car" from the Ford Motor Company Press Pool.

With longstanding delays in preparing this Mustang for their 1989 event season, PM Magazine began the season racing their black 1988 entry.

This vehicle had it's competition debut at the 1989 running of The Longest Day of Nelson Ledges. Which was not a sectioned SCCA or IMSA event.

Following Nelson Ledges, this white 1989 Mustang began its SCCA career for one or two events before retiring from competition.

After 1989, this vehicle would be converted for street use and gained a custom EFI manifold constructed by Zakspeed USA in 1990-91.

Believed to have been a pre-1990 Mustang. This Mustang was sponsored by Danielson Ford from Brooklyn Connecticut and competed in sectioned SCCA events during the very early 1990s.

Was a white paint car with a grey interior.

Rumor: Word is this Mustang was constructed using a number of left-over parts from the 1989 Saleen / General Tire showroom stock effort.

Note: Vehicle was destroyed and no longer exists.

I found this on a VHS tape we'd been storing for years. Lots of great old cars in this video that you don't see at the VCHC any more. This video wasn't shot by me or anybody in my family but I apologize for any clips that seem to be edited strangely - that's the way they came off the VHS tape.
