What the inside of a Series VI looks like with no fluid!
Hey Guys,
We've been getting a ton of calls about this, so I thought I would post up some pictures and explainations. What you guys need to do to conduct a self check is, look at the snout and the base. If the base has blue sealant like this one did, you can almost guarantee its leaking. But if it has red sealant, its a better chance its not. But the snout or the casing will look damp or wet. The biggest misconception is that you will see oil if its leaking - that is not the case. After servicing as many of these superchargers as we have, we now recommend having these looked at if your car is exceeding 40k+ miles on the supercharger. If you need / want your supercharger serviced, our services include: Remove Supercharger (or you can ship it to us) Disassemble Supercharger Rotating Assembly Repack Rear Needle Bearings Clean and re-coat supercharger screw journals Inspect Screws, gears, & gear casing Remove and inspect/clean the internal heat exchanger for leaks Reassemble Supercharger and fill with new gear oil. Inspect (replace if needed) boost bypass valve (new addition to our service) Install New Spark Plugs What happens when your supercharger runs out of oil (notice the blue sealant): To make the forged pulley change colors like that requires some extreme heat! This is what your internal heat exchanger looks like:
Pressed in needle bearings that use a Rheotemp grease that apparently could cause kidney failure if it gets on your skin.

LOL, a visual inspection at your 3k oil change is fine. The unique thing about the Superchargers is they dont consume or burn the oil, so as long as its not leaking, your 40-50k service on the blower is fine. If you have a Speedlab Center near you, have them give it a looksy once a year.

There are a couple of variables, best explained over the phone. Give us a call if your in need to get this done.
We just finished another sc service on Friday on a car with no forseen issues...supercharger oil was nearly empty and a pice of metal went for a joyride inside the supercharger! We will get it wrapped up today and post some pics.

After seeing the original pics from that SC that S281 Motorsports worked on, made me realize it was time to have mine inspected and the front bearing upgraded and replaced as it was leaking from the snout.
Very glad I had it done by Mat and Jason. I was able to see the damage done to the other one in person at their shop in Fullerton. |

I have a 2007 S281 with 17k miles and just inspected it per your directions below. Where about on the spout is it most common to leak? I notice that I have the blue sealant, but from what I can see on the left and right side(s) I don't see any oil? It actually looks clean besides the blue sealant on the edges. I haven't gotten a chance to examine the bottom of the spout yet, I mainly looked to where your arrow points as directed below in the main pic. When I check the fluid, is it suppose to be completely filled to the top of the hole (of course leaving enough room for the plug)? Other than it being completely empty, how will I know how much oil should be in there when full? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.. Any and all info will help! Thanks a bunch!

I inspected mine last weekend and I have the leak. The snout appeared to be "sweating" and wasn't an actual drip. It was coming from behind the pulley and on the backside of the snout. I took the supercharger off and had about 5 oz left. Nothing appeared damaged, but I have ordered an upgraded snout from Jason @ 281 Motorsports. He is very helpful. Thanks Jason!

I just examined underneath the snout towards the pulley, which is the closest I could get without taking anything off, and noticed a bunch of powder-like black dirt and can't tell if their is a leak. However, I then looked at the driver-side snout bolt and it seems to be a bunch of "sweating" around that area. I would assume this means their is a leak? When you checked your fluid level, did you remove the all surrounding parts in the way, because it looks you have to remove the intercooler hoses and stuff to get to it? (I am familiar with cars, just not supercharged ones, yet). How much did it cost to get the new snout from Jason?

You may not need to purchase another snout unless the oil is coming out of the front seal by the pulley. If it is just leaking at the mating surface to the supercharger, you would just have to re-seal it with the upgraded red sealant. To properly check how much oil you have left in your supercharger you need to remove the entire assembly from the car. You will have to drain the coolant from your intercooler and radiator and be careful when removed the crossover so you don't spill a bunch of coolant in your engine. It really isn't that difficult to do....maybe 2 hours or so for your first time. Best bet is to contact Jason @ 281 on Monday and send him pictures, etc and he will set you straight.

You dont have to buy a new snout. The seal is replaceable. Found that out after I purchased a new snout on mine when it was leaking.

I will wait to see what Jason's response is and act as necessary.
So other than seeing the leak, will the supercharger act differently (or make noises) to alarm you that something is wrong with it? I always noticed that my supercharger "felt" like it lagged since I purchased it. (I bought the car with 3K miles on it.) For instance I would go full throttle and it would go thru the RPMs and around 4K get a sudden burst, even though the boost gauge would read full boost throughout. |

So I checked today and mine is leaking too. I called Saleen and talked to Jess about the issue. He was very helpful, but he stated that because the car is out of its 3 year warranty, there is nothing that can be done other than having it serviced by PAS or a Saleen dealer.
My car has 9000 miles on it, and you can tell by the oil around the snout and supercharger body that it has been leaking for a while. I cannot believe a company would not stand behind something that they know is a design flaw and make the customer pay for it, even if the warranty is expired by 6 months. To be honest, I am a little disappointed. I called PAS and talked to Jimmy. It is going to be around $200 to service the leak.

Daytona, I think it really all depends on if you need to replace your snout or not. Ubnhad says you can just replace the seal if it's leaking by the pulley which should save some money. The sealant isn't very expensive and the oil is about $50 so it really depends on if you are going to take it to a local shop and have it done or try and do it yourself. Jason @ 281 has a good price for a full supercharger service, but you would have to ship it to them. He can give you those details.

Hopefully if you just try the seal it works, I just wanted the reassurance that I would not have to do it again by doing the whole nose cone assembly, with a new bearing, new seal, new gasket, new oil, and sealed better to the SC housing, plus a full inspection for other potential problems. Money well spent IMO.

He said that changing the seal and adding the fluid would take about 2.5 hours plus the cost of the new supercharger oil would be right around $200. I called and talked to Jess Albright at Saleen and he recommended PAS. I assume they do good work because they are a Saleen licensed installer, the only one in VA that I know of, and were directly recommended by Saleen. I assume they will inspect for further damage once it is all apart.

My 07 just hit 3000K - I bought it in 2010 as a dealer leftover. I notice that my windshield is speckled with what looks like oil - or maybe coolant? Is this normal or could the SC snout be the problem? I will rip it apart this winter - maybe it is still under warrant?

Can you tell me what brand and model of supercharger oil you recommend? I couldn't make it out on the picture you posted earlier, and where do you check the level and pour it in? Sorry if this is a really ignorant question. is it this? Can anyone suggest an installer in Las Vegas? My 07 extreme is at 20K miles and I see light dust pattern around the perimeter of the supercharger seal, seems mine may need some attention.

I spoke with Chanler at Breenspeed this morning he couldnt tell me how many ounces of oil to add just fill it to bottom of plug & to use the oil they sell and not use the Motorcraft oil. Then I call Jim Jr at JDM Engineering and he told me the Motorcraft oil is the same thing and that I would be fine. I have 8 ounces of Motorcraft supercharger oil in mine!

Ok guys, I got my car back today. Total cost to service the supercharger was $357.82. That includes all fluids (supercharger oil, anitfreeze, red sealant) and the 3 hours of labor to complete the job.
I also had an issue with my intake tube, which had melted to to oil build up around the throttle body. That cost me another $120 for a new intake tube. All in all, I am very pleased with the work PAS did. Mark and Jimmy are great to deal with. They even washed and waxed my car and detailed the interior. For those who are on the fence, take it to PAS, they will treat you right.

Got mine done today too. You got a good price. I did it myself and it cost me about $400, but I bought the new snout. Cost me a little more than that since I decided to install an MGW shifter and change tranny fluid with Royal Purple Synchromax...:)
