Blast from the past!
Hi there-
My HS buddy was the 1st owner of the car. It was bought brand new, fully loaded at Peyton Cramer Ford in Redondo Beach CA for ~$21600. CA- emissions. It spent most of it's early days in Palos Verdes Estates, CA and also in Irvine. Always run with synthetic fluids. We were friends with some of the original Saleen Autosport guys- Jimmy Moore, etc. I even worked on the 89 Saleen SSC and regular Saleen production line during a summer when I was in college. Here's some info on the car from the early days: Originally, stripe delete (in trunk) and silver 5 spoke Saleen ARE wheels. XP2000s replaced with Yokohama A008-Rs. [This car was purchased as a replacement for 86-107 also black/silver 3 door hatch since it burned to the ground in some freak electrical defect). Pioneer KEH 8050 radio tape deck + Pioneer 6 speakers + wired remote ctrl by the shifter. Grey cloth FloFit seats with lumbar. 3 spoke Veloce Momo steering wheel with Saleen cruise ctrl plate. For some odd reason, both arm rests had missing plugs on both sides so that the screws would be exposed. Not sure- if they fell out somewhere along the way from Saleen factory to Ford dealership or if they just weren't replaced. Genuine Saleen floor mats added after car purchased. No front plate was ever mounted (i.e. no holes drilled in the front bumper filler). Brake pads were upgraded to Performance Friction carbon brake pads up front and Raybestos Super Stopper Plus pads for the rear. Tinkering: We started with simple things: Fenderwell air intake silencer removal (I cracked the stock air filter intake box near the original screw that secures the backing to the actual fenderwell since I was new to turning wrenches at the time and got over zealous with the rachet). Advanced ignition timing. Jacobs Electronics spark plug wiring. shorty headers. Saleen subframe connectors (2nd Saleen (my 87 was the first) to have Saleen bolt on subframe connectors- later welded in) installed at the factory and Saleen/Walker Dynomax Cat-back Exhaust system (2nd Saleen (my original 86 was the first) to have Saleen exhaust installed on customer car). We even made home ram air kits using dryer duct tubing from Home Depot with 2 scoops mounted under the passenger side. (if you look underneath the front passenger side- if it's the original fender well lining, you may see tiny holes from the sheet metal screws still in the plastic where we mounted the dryer vent scoops facing front! it was effective b/c we ran it at Carlsbad Raceway with a rag in the scoop by mistake and then next run without it and it was 0.1sec difference). A Ford/SVO off-road H-pipe was installed (I would keep cats on mine b/c I'm a friend of the environment). K&N air filter used, then Saleen High performance filter. Saleen Stainless Steel Brake Sleeves were inserted into the brake pads. We also used a Mr. Gasket 180 degree high performance thermostat. We even tried 160 degree, but this made the car run in the "cold" mode full time- back then, we were told that this was better for 'performance' b/c it would trick the computer. His previous 86 Saleen and my 87 Saleen had a built in electrical connector by the center drop down map light. We really liked having this feature since it allow our Escort/Passport radar detectors to be connected directed to the car and not with some long cigarette charger cord. We embarked on homemade version since Saleen stopped putting that feature in early 1988. You may be wondering what the round plug is for. We ordered a straight power cord from Cincinnati Microwave and cut 1 end off and replaced it with a male plug and put the corresponding female end into the map light. External: the 302 decals, Saleen windshield banner, bumper numbers were replaced at least 1x by myself. We used Silver as well at white (I see that the windshield banner is missing). There was an external silver pinstripe that ran along the upper front fender, door, and rear quarter panel that was removed with Plastikote paint thinner with q-tips prior to installation of the SA-10 Chevron stripes. Racecraft Suspension decals removed at time of Chevron stripes. The hatch had been repainted by the original Saleen subcontractor since the previously filled in LX hatch holes were beginning to show) and the roof had to repainted since there was a bike roof deck accident and 4 dents were created when it was bumped off from it's 4 mounts while trying to drive out of a low-hanging garage door. The under hood insulation was removed in order to shave weight. The external door window trim had been replaced in mid-90s and the rear quarter window trim was repaired by the same shop in Torrance CA that painted the roof. SCCA Championship Wreaths were put in the quarter windows as Saleen. These were the 1st test set on a customer car since the 89 did not come with Ford Motorsport Quarter window decals. (glad to see they are still in place). The rear hatch shocks had been replaced- I believe we used a pair that we picked up at Pepboys (don't remember the brand) that had a lifetime warranty on them. We experimented with 80W high output headlights. Those did not last long so I would bet that those long burned out. **Currently in your pic, the 302 decals are NOT in the correct location- too close to the end of the hood- unless that is Supercharged- even that seems a little too far to the end. ** Currently in your pic, you'll notice the SA-10 Chevron's a bit off: this was the first car we put them on so I didn't trim the top edge to run flush with the natural fender line. After this car, I pre-trimmed them so it looks more natural. Glad that they are still on after all these years. The individual Saleen letter on the doors were made from 2 rear hatch decals that were individually cut and spaced symmetrically on both doors. Not sure what we ended doing with the Mustang part of the decals. ** If it's the original windshield, the Saleen windshield logo may be UV burned into the upper windshield tint. I vaguely recall that the windshield needed to be replaced in the mid-90s b/c we had to figure out how to re-glue the rearview mirror into the correct place. Maintenance: synthetic motor oil every 3k (Mobil 1 or Castro Syntec 15-50), car was meticulously broken in during the 1st 1000 miles with conventional stock fill driving at various speeds. We did most of this in 1st 2 wks of car in the middle of the nite along Pacific Coast Highway from Torrance to Newport Beach and also the 405 freeway. Dot 5 synthetic brake fluid, AC line clips were replaced and new genuine R-12 was refilled so the AC was ice cold in the early 90s. Redline MTL and Kauffmann ATF were used in the original T-5 and Redline differential fluid was run. This car was always hand-washed. Over the years, we used Malm's carunuba wax, Eagle One Carunuba Spray Wax, Meguairs Car Cleaner Wax, Meguairs Car Scrub, Klasse and Bullit Car Polishes, and Klasse Paint Sealant. Hand-dried with Absorber. We used Chevron Techron every 3-4 months. Only super unleaded (76, Chevron, Shell, or Mobil back then) used. We routinely replaced the cap and rotor with Blue Streak parts. and the last battery was a Interstate Megatron unit that had been relocated to the hatch. The water pump was replaced one while in my buddy's ownership b/c after that we started adding Redline Water Wetter (originally a solid that was mixed into the coolant that also stated it was a lubricant for the water pump. We went with a 20lb Stant radiator cap that was purchased at any Pep Boys. Real Motorwork: Bob @Service Center in Torrance CA ~ 1992 installed GT-40 ported heads that had stock casting markings ground off and 30lb injectors that were sanded and painted to be stock color, 1.6 SVO/Crane Cam Roller Rockers and Kauffmann under drive pulleys and performance camshaft. High performance valve springs. New pistons/piston rings. Engine was balanced and blue-printed. Fluidampr harmonic balancer, adjustable Fuel pressure regulator installed, FMS 155 lph fuel pump. 3.55 SVO gears installed. The upper and lower air intakes were extrude honed for additional flow. The Throttle Body was a 65mm SVO unit that was also enlarged and port matched with an enlarged plate. Earl's performance fittings were installed. Over the years, this Saleen was also tuned by James @ MPH Mustang in Huntington Beach, Steve @Powertrain Dynamics in Huntington Beach, CA, Danny Bahn in Downey, CA (when he was at Kauffmann), and later on Joe at Chicane Sport. In addition, a SVO aluminum driveshaft was installed. A 4 core performance US Radiator was installed (Saleen spec from JBA that was originally on the 86-107 Saleen that died an untimely death) and we used standard green Prestone coolant with Redline water water in 70% water/30% coolant mixture. Front sway bar bushings were lubricated with silicone spray (temp) and properly lubricated with marine grease by Saleen and Chicane. Then, at Saleen sidewalk sale, 1 piece Saleen Speedlines were installed and the SA-10 Chevron stripes were put on ~ 1993. In fact, I was the one who put the decals on. Front wheels would not have Saleen Center caps b/c they would not clear the existing front bearings. The quad shocks were removed at that time since wider Bridestone RE71 or BFG Comp TA 255s were put on the rear as were new bump stops. Performance Friction brake pads were employed (although not very good first thing in the morning when the pads were cold) and Goodridge Stainless Steel front brakelines were used to improve braking. A Saleen Adjustable Stainless Steel clutch quadrant was installed along with a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. This car was so buttery smooth and powerful. But in the quest for "more power"~ 1994, Pro-charger intercooled system (14 lb+ if I recall) with special pulley was installed. Custom Fuel programming, MSG ignition timing, larger C&L Mass air sensor, and larger Vortec TRex fuel pump were employed. New 93 Saleen Strut Tower brace was installed b/c stock 89 Saleen brace would not clear Pro-Charger set up. Custom chrome moly 6 point roll cage was installed from a place near San Diego CA. We blew up the stock T-5 and a TKO Tremec Transmssion was installed. Also, a driveshaft hoop was installed as a safety add-on and a driver side A-pillar digital air-fuel mixture gauge was installed. (Is that still there?) Then, the car was being run on Race 103 Unocal 76 unleaded gas. Yet, another Saleen sidewalk sale netted: Saleen rear ctrl arms and matched with SVO heavy duty rear upper ctrl arms. A Saleen/Racecraft Rear Panhard rod was also installed. This car had been tracked: Carlsbad raceway and also back in Long Beach at the old Terminal Island Dragstrip. This Saleen also had many previous street 'encounters' on the back roads of southern CA (esp inland empire), but this car was always well cared for and had never been in a car crash while in my buddy's possession. At another Saleen sidewalk sale, Racecraft Rear Shock Tower brace was purchased and installed by James (formerly of MPH Mustang in Huntington Beach CA). My memory gets a little foggy towards the end b/c I was on the east coast when the car was actually sold ~ 1998/9? I think a 4 point Schroth harness may have been installed since it was a near 600 hp monster. This car was a beast! Dyno'd ~ 550+ HP that was also a canyon corner craver. It got such poor gas mileage and wasn't street legal so it was retired as a daily driver. We both moved to the East Coast for grad school and my buddy sold it eventually to someone in NC who had it shipped from southern CA to NC. That was the last I heard of car and I'm glad it's still survives. Hit me up with any additional questions. Share some more pictures/history if you can. (or you can PM me if you'd rather not do it publicly). I have some pictures at my parent's house and maybe even a video (if the VHS tape hasn't disintegrated) of the car when it was new. After all the memories, this seems like it was my car- lol. Enjoy!
