Default Seeking information: 89-0109 - 1 of 1 notch

Hello. My name is Dave from Charlotte NC and I am new to the boards here. I just bought what was thought for years to be #89-0109. I bought the car from a good customer/friend of mine that had owned the car since 2000. Previous to that he had known about this car since the mid/early nineties as it had belong to a friend of his who was a driving instructor. Once I was approached about buying the car I had my friend send over several pics and everything looked legit. Cowl tag/Saleen ID was in place as well as the plaque on the shifter plate along with the correct guages. All the stickers appear to be correct down to the wreath in the rear window. After a quick search if found out that notch Saleens were extremely rare. I decided to make sure so I called Saleen and spoke with Tony. My heart sank after I rattled off the vin# of the car as Tony told me that no records exsisted for this car. I must have asked him a dozen times if there could be a mistake but he assured me that he was correct. I guess the only good news was that the #109 car was indeed a notch and better yet it was a one of one car for 1989 being a black car with biege interior. This explained something that seemed very odd to me which was the fact that the car I was checking on is white w/blue stripes with beige interior. That seemed like a very odd combination to me. I also noticed that Saleen cowl tag was attached with screws and convenietly the vin# part had been cut off at the bottom of the tag. All this being said I know that my friend is honest as the day is long and when I told him about this I could tell he was close to tears. We came to the conclusion that the 109 car had met an untimely demise sometime in the early ninties and that all the left over parts were transferred into this car including the complete interior. This is evident because the interior code for the white car is red. Being that my friend was giving me an awesome deal to begin with and the fact that this car is super bad *** having over 25k worth of mods (331 w/TFS high ports,TKO 600, Full Griggs GR40 suspension, 13 in brakes just for starters) and the fact it at least had lineage/history to the real deal I decided to go ahead and buy the car. Now to the point of this post is that I would love to see if anyone knows anything about the original #89-0109 Saleen notch. From all I can gather it made its way to the eastern part of North Carolina as the car I bought was delivered and lived its entire life there until I bought it. Again the original car was black with gold stripes and beige interior. Thanks in advance for any information!

Default 89-#109

I believe the car is still in NC and not operational. I was told this by another enthusiest that has seen the car in person.I can't confirm this. I was told the rear was missing. Your car may have the rear so if ou are under it and see 355 stamped in each tube with red paint over it or see a Ford Motorsport sticker or tag, it may be from that car.

A black, tan, gold 1989 Saleen coupe sounds pretty attractive.

I looked under the car today and sure enough both sides of the axles are stamped 355 on both axle tubes and have a splotch of red paint over the stamping. Also the under side of the center housing has a large red marking as well. I'll add that these red markings are just "slopped" on. Sounds like the car your talking about is very likely the one I'm looking for!!! I'd love to see how badly the original body had been hit. If the opportunity was there I'd buy the orignal car, fix it and transfer the parts back over to it! Being that the car was taken apart years ago it might not had occurred to the owner that it was going to be so rare and didn't think twice about transferring the parts to another coupe rather than fix what he had.

Decisions, decisions... I still have some very mixed emotions about how to go about restoring it. Like I said above I'm going to try and locate the original carcus. If that is fixable and the owner will sell it then it will be united with its original parts. If that comes about then for sure it will go back 100% original. If its a total basket case then I'll continue the tribute route with this car. I'm not ruling out painting this one black but I'm a perfectionist and as beautiful as black is it will drive me crazy keeping it flawless. On top of that I'm one of the few people that loves white cars.

Default 89 109

My contact says the car isn't the one. I will figure the vin out.We need to figure out when the car was made at Ford. August,September,or October. It was shipped frm saleen in October. The Vin on #80 is 112678.The vin on #206 is 119485 so this car is lower than that.Need to figure out the first three of the last 6.Most likely late Sept or early October.I need to figure out the vin ranges for each month. Most likely 112 or 113

Coupey, thanks for all your help!!! I've made a ton of progress with her so far!! I've done some extensive cleaning, removed all the SCCA and race related stickers, scored a set of Stern replicas and have done a ton of touch up work on the paint to hold me over till it gets a full resto. Also I have bought a full set of 89 Saleen Flofits, door panels and correct Momo steering wheel!! Heres a link to the way I found the car and below is how it is starting to shape up!! I'll post more pics soon!http://www.flickr.com/photos/64820017@N04/

More pictures added above. Keen eyes will notice that the bumper # reads 10. The nine was a casualty of my home based bumper refinishing so it is what it is for now. Its a great 10 footer for now but by spring it should be ready for showing!
