Thumbs up Steve Saleen Reunited with Saleen Brand -- Announces New Models for 2013

STEVE SALEEN IS REUNITED WITH THE SALEEN BRAND
Back in The Driver Seat of His Legacy and Heritage,
Steve Saleen Announces Launch of Several New Saleen Models

Saleen Forums News -- April 2, 2012 -- Famed racecar driver and automotive icon, Steve Saleen, announced today that the Saleen brand has been returned to its rightful holder -- himself. After several years of litigation, Steve Saleen has successfully regained control of the Saleen brand name and the products he has created and built since 1984.

"In 2007, it was a difficult decision to resign from Saleen, Inc.", says Steve Saleen. "But I knew it had to be done in order to preserve the Saleen brand and to ensure the authenticity and high performance that our customers had come to expect."

That also marked the year that Steve Saleen unveiled his signature line, SMS Supercars (SMS are his initials, Steve Mark Saleen). SMS Supercars was the continuation of Mr. Saleen’s vision for high-performance automotive manufacturing. During the few short years that followed its inception, Steve Saleen's SMS Supercars successfully launched three new models: the SMS 570 Challenger, SMS 302 Mustang and the SMS 620 Camaro. With this, SMS Supercars also launched an entire catalog of aftermarket parts, including the innovative SMS 296 Supercharger system.

Steve Saleen further added, "Although the Saleen brand is a huge part of my identity, I knew it was the vision and passion that would shine through on my signature vehicles. However, it couldn’t have been done without the support of the Saleen community. The foundation and inspiration that they gave me to move forward with my vision was what ultimately moved us to regain the Saleen branding. Most importantly the Saleen community gets their identity back as well."

Jim Dvorak, who heads the Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club, explains, "There have been some tough times for the members of our community, starting with Steve's resignation from Saleen, Inc. The company tried to tell us he retired, and even put a positive spin on it, but only some of us knew what was really going on. Most of the company was sold off, and then it changed hands again. Many of our owners and enthusiasts were feeling abandoned and confused, and quite frankly they were misled about what evolved and why. It has been especially confusing for new entrants into the hobby, but also for longtime followers of Steve Saleen who weren't aware of the day-by-day happenings and didn't have a direct line to Steve that we have." SOEC is the officially-recognized organization for the marque, and has been a dedicated force behind Steve Saleen for decades.

The return of the Saleen brand will allow Steve Saleen to begin offering all of his current SMS Supercars products under the Saleen flag. With this move, SMS Supercars will be carefully integrated into the Saleen branded family of products.

Steve Saleen will also be launching under the Saleen brand its 4V, SC, SSC, and X Models of the 2013 Mustang, 2012 Challenger, and 2012 Camaro ranging from 425hp to over 750 horsepower. These models will have the latest technology in Aerodynamics, Suspension, Braking, and Performance starting at less than $40,000.

This is expected to provide a full range of products for all Saleen dealers, Speed Shops, Race Teams, and Automotive customers in the American Pony Car segment of the performance market. All aftermarket offerings will include: Saleen Superchargers, SMS Superchargers, Saleen and SMS vehicle body components for Mustang, Challenger and Camaro, his signature SMS butterfly hoods, as well as all other interior and engine parts for these vehicles.

Having reunited with the Saleen brand, Mr. Saleen is planning to make available all 1984 to present Saleen vehicle aftermarket, replacement and warranty parts. These will be available through the Saleen.com website, by calling Saleen (formerly SMS Supercars) at 800-888-8945, or through the nearest authorized Saleen dealer.

Moving forward, Mr. Saleen will have the Saleen Owner’s Registry updated to include all SMS branded vehicles, which will allow them to gain their rightful place in the Saleen family. The Saleen Owner’s Registry is the official record established to maintain the authenticity and exclusivity of all Steve Saleen signature vehicles. Also, the Registry provides the lineage from which a Letter of Authenticity can be requested by an owner, which documents the origin, provenance, and authenticity of each signature vehicle.

Additionally, any current owners or dealers of SMS branded vehicles will be provided with replacement badging for their vehicles, if they so desire. They can contact the customer service division of Saleen directly, provide the details on their vehicle, and the replacement Saleen badging will be sent out immediately.

"With this new launch of Saleen and the new models on the horizon, we are excited about what the future holds for Steve, the brand, and especially for our members," continues Dvorak. "It's the best news we've had in many years, and will really inject the hobby with energy and passion!"

Wow, pretty wild. Ive only been around a couple years, and honestly never really understood what happened and still don't, but this is awesome news. Ive had quite a few questions and concerns with my 02 extreme that I never really seemed to be able to get the full story, and definitely not without a lot of time and research. I don't know if that will change at all, but either way great news. After reading this, it also makes it seem like older parts will be easier to come by now? I could be overly optimistic, not sure. Great news. Congrats to saleen family and happy B-day to Mr. Saleen.

Guess that explains why they were moving the records again when I ordered my letter of authenticity a couple weeks ago.

Should be interesting to see how this effects values of the cars and parts.

***Fantastic*** news, and the only resolution that makes sense for all. Hope this injects the same enthusiasm into Steve's life that it undoubtedly will into the Saleen community. (And from a selfish perspective, I hope this means I can soon track down some of the accessories and spares that were becoming quite elusive!)

I followed Saleen (the man and the car) for years before buying mine, and I've always been very proud to own one. It looks as good to me today as the day I drove it off the lot with 31 miles on it in May of 2005. They aren't common around here and I am often asked about the car and the company; it will be really nice to once again tell the "short version" of the Saleen story, and not the longer, muddled version which ended with my car being an orphan. Thanks for fighting your way back home, Steve. :-)

Would love to hear more of the details. I picked up isolated information from a Saleen Inc. employee who I prodded for details at a local BBQ last year and heard they were not intending to issue any 2012's with the Saleen name on it.
I ordered a replacement intercooler and asked Saleen in Michigan about that. I received a contradictory response that didn't make a lot of sense. Somewhere I heard there was one or more breaches on the part of Saleen Inc. that I know nothing about and that Steve was back in court. And now this. It is very good news.
The Saleen banner goes back on the windshield. SMS on the windshield didn't look as good but you have to go with what you got.

I just don't get it.

Hmm, interesting. Guess my questioning why the SEMA presence with Steve Saleen getting the company name back "without knowing ANY of the facts" was completely off base back in November.

ULTRA Great news!! Can't believe it, actually!! I was wondering why Steve was planning on being back at Sturgis this year, as I thought last year was a one time thing (and that I missed it). Can't wait to make the drive up this year-so glad the planets have re-aligned...:)

Soooo,...a full catalog of parts from 84-current, eigh? Maybe it's time to finally trick out my Windstar...

Right on! My squeaky wheel, is starting to quiet down.

One of the few times in recent history where "staying the course" actually came out positive.

Thanks for sticking it out Steve!

Obviously great news and a nice birthday present for Steve. My question will be what will happen to the '08-'11 Saleen branded vehicles. Will they become worthless by being shunned by the new Saleen? Or will Steve and company do the right thing and include them in the registry as he should to insure complete harmony in the entire community. And yes, I hope they decide to keep Jess Albright around in some degree. He was a continual voice of reason and always took the high ground. He is an asset to the hobby.

This is wonderful news. The company was nowhere near the same after Steve and Liz left. It will be nice to be dealing with a "family" and not a "corporation" again. The family feel is part of what really set Saleen apart. I can't wait to see what aftermarket XP parts are slated to be produced. Welcome home Steve.

It says he will bring the SMS vehicles into the registry fold, I would imagine the SR holding cars will be put it. But then again the 2010 models were not under his design.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!! man what a day, first some nutcase goes and pulls an April fools with a mockup of a 4 door mustang!! that made me so mad i wanted to go ballistic on the guy for even putting those thoughts back in the heads of people who might be in a position to execute such down right lunacy! Then some real news of Saleen getting his name back. and be sure IF THIS IS SOME APRIL FOOLS JOKE WE SHOULD ALL FIND THE GUY that made it and.... 'have a little talk with him' To be sure if its true then raise the saleen flag and let the good times roll!!! cause nothing sounds better than an all new 2014 mustang remanufactured by Saleen!

Remember you can't buy somebody else's heritage and legacy you need to earn it.
If you had ever spoken to Mike Shields, you would know that his intention was to keep the brand alive. He was under the impression, rightly or wrongly, that Steve was doing his own thing with SMS and he saw a business opportunity to take a well known brand and build a company out of it. In my opinion, he bit off way more than he could chew, as the development and production costs of the 2010 car nearly bankrupted him and his other companies, forcing him to sell off most of his assets. It doesn't make him a bad guy. From what I've heard, he even tried to partner with Steve in the early days, but that never worked out.

I don't blame Mike Shields for what he did. He tried to keep a great heritage/brand alive, but was a little naive about the Saleen community and the loyalty to Steve himself, which put him behind the 8-ball before he sold the first car.

My hope is that since this is done, we can get both clubs together working towards the same goal. Promoting the brand and having fun with our friends and our Saleens!

Dan

I may have mis-spoke. I suppose since the records came from Saleen/Revstone, the '08-'11 cars are already in the official registry. I guess the question is; Will they remain there?

I am tickled that Steve is offering SMS owners the opportunity to re-badge their cars. How freaking cool is that?

Another question? Will the new racing championship wreath decal include 2011 on it???

The 2008-09 Saleen Inc (ASC) produced vehicles were always accepted by Steve Saleen. They continued the styling introduced by SS & Phil Frank and employed the engineering by many long term Saleen Inc employees.

The Racecraft vehicles were grandfathered into acceptance since they were produced by Saleen Inc, a variation of the company SS founded.

Can I safely ASSume that the 2011 Saleen/Speedlab cars will also fall into this category?

Anybody know how many grabber blue SMS's were made? I've seen pics of a 10 and an 11 coupe
so far, the only ragtop I've seen is mine...
