Default 85-0001 Saleen Mustang

Found!

As found, almost unchanged from the day the man sold it to the public.

That is one sweet Four Eyed Saleen. Looks like it was here in California all along.
What extra parts did you get with it? I spot the 15" Hayashi wheels, Wolf steering wheel and 3 spats.
Did you purchase it yet?

I bought it. It was less than a mile from my door sitting outside under a cover, and I never even knew it was there. Just goes to show you never should stop looking, and follow up on every lead. I saw the car years ago and didn't chase down the owner. I was hearing rumors for the past few months about a mystery car somewhere in town, and I discounted the tips as bogus! This is a small community, just imagine whats hiding in big cities and small towns all over the country. Never stop looking, never.

None of the parts you see in the photobucket account is even for this car. Its all for 85-0090.

I did get a pair of 85 front airdam sides, one was road-rash damaged, from when the car had a 85 spec airdam.

Looks like the car has the Harada antenna base, but I don't have the mast.

Sweet... How crazy it that? Less than a mile from your house. I might have to take a ride to Santa Maria in #009 to go look at 001.

What are your plans for it?

I'm going to clean up the car, get the mechanicals nice and reliable and enjoy the car. In the process, I'll document the changes in whats done to the motor, if anything. One day, I may run into the original owner and we could talk about whats been done and what he remembers from the early days of the company and his first car.

The car is supposed to have a pull ahead front suspension, and it does have an odd stainless steel plate with Ford part numbers bolted to the front K-member. I've never seen such a plate before, but it doesn't mean its anything special, just that I haven't seen one before.

The car also has the usual baseball bat rear fender roll, like the later cars have. More rumors exist that the car may have had 4 wheel disc brakes for a time. This would lead to the question if the car was also the recipient of a SVO width rear disc swap at some point.

Its really fun, because the car breaks all the rules of correctness for a 85 Saleen and its totally correct in doing so.

At one time 86-0014 was for sale. I believe the owner claimed this was the vehicle seen in the Saleen Performance Parts catalogs during the 1990s.

White with blue stripes.

Amazing that it had escaped the hands of collectors this long. Congrats on the find!

Thanks Yellow!

I'm very lucky to have been the guy to get it.

Spent the last few hours working the paint. It looks to be a bit brighter shade of white than the usual Oxford White. Probably looked better in photos than the factory hue.

Here are a couple pics of 85-0001 from the Patty Redeker book: "The History and Development of the Saleen Mustang."

These were taken at a used car lot back in the 90's.

I have seen pictures of your mad paint skills in the past. It should come out very nice. White hides a lot.

LOL!

I must be getting too predictable, because that exactly what I'm in the process of doing!

You're right on with white. It hides a lot.

Hello it was my understanding when I ordered 88-007 that one through six were kept as race cars. I still have the letter from Saleen stating 88-007 was the first car to be sold to a consumer in 1988. Was it different in 1985?

Competition vehicles had their own numbering away from the street vehicles.

Numbers 0001 through 0005 (or 1-5, 7-9) were sometimes saved for company vehicles, employee vehicles, friends, special dealers, etc.

Very cool. Congrats on the find, AND purchase. Keep that one close as it is highly collectible.

Thanks guys.

Any time I find a set of period wheels in four lug I'll buy them. The ones on the black car were from a local guys 89 GT California Edition. Originally white, but the beautiful machined finish was under the paint.

There's a cheesy ebony and ivory song coming to mind. Great looking tandem. I am jealous.
