Talking Video: Saleen Exhaust w/Magnaflow + Corsa = :)

In my relentless pursuit for exhaust note nirvana, I finished off the Corsa today, so far I am very pleased with the results.

I started off by initially replacing the stock cat for a stainless steel Magnaflow X-pipe with Hi-flow cats. Sound was much better than stock imho however still had some drone issues. Total weight savings was 8lbs vs stock.

For the catback, I had considered the Borlas but wanted the Corsa bc of their noise cancelling feature, can't stand the droning! Last week, I finally came across a nicely used stainless steel Corsa catback for 05-09 GT's, and had the tips cut-off and re-welded inline with my Saleen OEM center exhaust. Sounds MUCH better now and so far no noticeable drone issues inside the cabin. It's quiet at cruise and absolutely rips when you get on it.

Here's an upload of the OEM exhaust-->Magnaflow cats--> Magnaflows + Corsa. Sounds better under load but gives you an idea anyway.

Thanks, I think they've gotten kinda used to it over the years. :)

Dave-it's a huge improvement over stock imho. Would love some longtubes but CA emissions is a nightmare.

I know. The stock is realllly tinny. I put in cutouts. You can adjust your sound. Look into it.

That sounds really good. Much deeper than stock. Was it expensive to tie those mufflers into the stock center exhaust?

Wasn't that bad at all. About an hour and $100.00 for the install. The Corsas are about 2" larger in diameter but there is enough clearance to cut out the OEM mufflers and reweld inline. I was actually surprised to see the OEM magna mufflers already had holes and were in pretty rough shape. The corsas are stainless so I won't be needing to replace them. Also Did some highway driving today and the cabin noise is virtually gone now. Will try to get a driveby video for comparison.

Each video the engine sounded gradually better. Still seems real loud, I can't believe you don't hear it in the cabibn, at cuising altitude.

Wow I like that sound. I HATE the drone of the factory exhaust in the cabin, drives me nuts. I was thinking JBA catted X pipe and new drone free mufflers. Your setup just may do the trick, thanks.

Nicely done! I definitely love the sound progression. I have an extra center exhaust laying around I might have to modify :). I need to find the right mufflers first. Can you take a photo of what it looks like underneath? You don't think there is any horsepower lost from loosing the dump in the magnaflow muffler do you? I have always thought you never want to much back pressure or too little.

I felt the same way, before the car was just loud with annoying drone. I think the tru-X does help in equalizing the exhaust flow producing a much more refined note. You really don't notice cabin resonance at light cruise but when you step on the throttle it gets loud but in a good way =).

XXBoostinXX, I don't think there is much of a difference losing the dumps. From the exit of the 2.5" Corsa muffler there is only about a 16" section of piping terminating at the tips. Nothing noticeable power wise in the buttt-o-meter either way.

This is my 6th mustang and probably favorite exhaust setup now maybe with one exception being my 96 mustang cobra which had shorty headers, DR Gas Offroad X pipe + borlas. That setup sounded more indy car like at high rpm.

Will get some more pics and drive by vids...

3 drive by clips:

1) Cruise
2) Mid Throttle
3) Full Throttle

Inside cabin just cruising around a bit.

Whoa!!! Sounds incredible ...Thanks for posting vids and pics. I wonder if these Corsa mufflers will sound similar with a JBA catted X? It should sound similar, right?

Np, sound might be similar but I think the Magna tru-x with a full crossover section might equalize the exhaust flow better, just a guess.

Thanks my Saleen brother. These are the Corsa 14311 mufflers and I believe they are listed as their touring model. They are very $$$ new, around $700 but I just saw another nice used set which sold on s197forum.com for $300. They are stainless and should outlast the car.

So, with this new exhaust setup, you've eliminated the additional flow of the turn downs in the stock mufflers, and route all the flow through the center exit pipes?

Yes all the flow is now through the corsas and out the center exhaust.

Do you have a write-up on how the exhaust was done? I'm considering doing the exact same thing if I can find a shop that is comfortable doing it. Also, do you feel like it takes away from it being an authentic saleen?

I would bet you have lost some flow with this set up, maybe even a few hp and some added a little extra boost from the new restrictions. The exits of the Corsa mufflers have been restricted to a much smaller pipe, addition of more bends and out the centre pipes. Would of been a much more efficient system if you cut the centre tips and had them welded in place for looks only, and just ran the Corsa muffler straight dumped like the factory dumps.

Bad idea if your looking for performance

There's only about 24" of piping from the exit of the Corsa mufflers to the Saleen exhaust tips. I sincerely doubt there is any significant loss in hp with this setup but next time I'm on the dyno I will compare the old setup with the new.

Kenny, it's a pretty simple job for any decent muffler shop to handle. IMHO the stock exhaust has noticeable drone doesn't sound nearly as good as the Corsas and you can always weld your stock mufflers back in place if need be.

Sounds awesome 07s281sc!

Here is the dreaded CA emissions question...from my understanding, there is no catted x-pipe that is CA legal; how are you going to get yours smogged and passing the visual?

Default Nice!

Man that sounds good!
We're not sure if we are keeping the car, but if we do, I have to get away from that raspy oval center exhaust sound. On crank, idle and low rpms, everyone raves about the sound of my car. I have ARH long tubes, catless with h-pipe and stock axle back, and built motor. But if I get above 3k rpms, that higher raspy sound kicks in. I want to do a work around like this, where I keep the center exhaust for looks, but that's it. I may have to copy your set up. Sorry! ;)

Also looking into installing some high flow cats. The exhaust smell is just too much, but we were told that s/c cars ruin cats quickly.

It should pass the sniff test without any problems. I guess magnaflow like many others didn't want to pay the CARB mod tax, so I believe it is currently 49 state legal. If they give me a hard time on the visual then I could always swap the stock cat pipe back in.

KC, I bet they would sound great with Longtubes!

Bringing back this thread. So I would just take any catback and cut the tips off, and weld it to the pipes going to the center?

Default Saleen Exhaust- Magnaflow + Corsa = :)

I went with Corsa too. My mufflers are setup the same way Saleen had it... functional centers and dumps. We cut the Corsa tips off and welded dumps in their place, for the centers we punched a hole in the muffler can and welded in the Saleen piping. Suggestions are to measure, measure, measure, cut, measure and weld. I love my new sound and its aggressively LOUD - especially at WOT. I think the longtube Kooks and catted-X may have helped elevate that a bit though. :-)

Thanks. I was real nervous about the change, but I'm quite pleased with the end result
