Now i see why Steve is suing to keep his name of that... "thing"...
Looks like they raided the 05-09 parts bin, tossed on the Dan Gurney wheels and ordered some cheap body parts from CDC... threw some decals on and embroidered "Saleen" on the headrests...

I don't know... I don't think i like it. I've grown accustom to my Saleens looking like nothing else on the road. This one is going to be mistaken for a plane old GT. I'll save for the SMS.

Lets figure there were California Sports, GT Sports, V6 Sports and the previous Racecraft Edition produced over the past 25-years. The idea on an entry-level, Saleen-kissed Mustang is not a new one.
The current incarnation does hold a familiar naming convention note, the 435S, which will tie the 2008 ½ - 2009 Racecraft 420S into the family. It was a peculiar vehicle since it was marketed as the non-Saleen, built by Saleen Inc, with Saleen parts… but it's a "Racecraft Vehicle?" Quote:
Historically the Specials are a curiosity since they seem to have a relatively low survival rate. If we use this forum and automotive fairs as a gauge… I believe we have two Racecraft owners registered and I’ve seen one owner RC at a show, to date. Quote:
If it were me, I would start the 435S model with a 19" standard. Since the 2010 GT has an 18" wheel as base; one up the factory offering. Then too... I don't know the amount of overstock MJA acquired. Quote:
In terms of marketing... SALEEN holds more perceived value than RACECRAFT. Saleen = 25-Years of performance vehicles. Racecraft = A generic trade name. Why take additional effort to build a new brand, when it's going to be built with equipment that either states SALEEN or hold flying S logos. Quote:
The aero kit on the 420S was a CDC/Ford Racing splitter and PJ/Heritage wing. Quote:
I think the standard Mustang buyer or speed freak will hold interest in the 435S Saleen. If you pick up a base GT for the estimated $28,000.00 or so… and opt for a 435S package at $10,000.00… after taxes and fees you’ll probably be in at 40K. It should under-cut most of the tuner cars in terms of price and advertised equipment. My only issue would be competition from FMC and Ford Racing Performance Parts. A buyer has the option, starting with the 2010 model, of a Track Pack suspension group. They can also request the selling dealer to equip their new steed with a FRPP Whipple before the sale and retain their 3/36,000 warranty. OR: A buyer can purchase the same $28K GT and have the dealer equip the vehicle with a FRPP suspension kit and Whipple before delivery and still retain the 3/36,000 from Ford. If I were to offer an entry-level Saleen, I would have placed more into the styling and package. That's my only semi-complaint, flashbacks of another McCammon car. I question how the PJ/Heritage wing looks mounted to the 2010 trunk since it was designed for the 2005-2009 lid. It would have been pretty novel to design a unique throwback whale-tail (as standard) to tie a key part of Saleen heritage into the car. The hood decal is cool with the body color chevrons poking through, but then no need for a second pair of chevrons on the fenders. Overly stressing a Saleen connection. The 2008 ½ - 2009 Racecraft side striping was a feature that I liked on that model. Would have been neat to keep that idea... or once again… design a throwback decal kit and offer it in blue, gold, silver and black. The Racecraft Focus concept had a nice visual play with the wrap-around black side striping and color matched wheels. Jeff had mentioned during Carlisle that the entry-level Saleen would feature center exit exhaust. I'm imagining that the 2005-2009 S-kit either protruded too far from a stock 2010 bumper... or had interference with the plate mount area. That would have been a cool item had it made the cut as a standard feature. Basically, I would have liked to seen the 435S as more of a "package car," a trait Saleen (as a brand) was known for, and less of a "you finish yourself." I understand the 435S and have no issue with it, but I can't say Saleen heritage will sell this model or that it will not get lost when inventoried on a sales lot. The car has a great chance to be a sales leader with a proven selection of parts for $10,000.00. The Saleen name is secondary for the 435S. If I were to market the 435S... I would speak to the folks in the SCCA and NHRA to see how to competitively classify this vehicle for motorsports. The Folks (Mike, Jeff, Jess) should be applauded for their efforts over the past six or so months. Parts supplying, owner's inquiries, etc. I'd agree. If you compare the SMS 460 to the 435S in terms of statement projected. The vehicles from Steve Saleen are an achievable dream. A reason to work hard, to make a visual and performance declaration when achieved. Dreams Vs. Realities |

two saleens..
all this has done imo is dilute the saleen name..you cant have two (2) saleens..and a saleen should be made by STEVE SALEEN..not mj acq or whatever..the cheap watered down 2010 validates this..and dont say its a cheap version due to the economic times..that is bs..
SMS buiild the cars..saleen/mj sell the old parts..car design is not for you.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If we use a few of the basic Mustang boards and message area as a gauge... some of those folks seem to like it. Garnering attention from a completely different audience. Will the 435S be produced off a Saleen supplied knock down Premium or Deluxe? Or from dealer stock or drop shipped? Can one purchase a GT equipped with the Ford offered accessory packages? 1, 4, 5 if they'd rather have Ford's wings and scoops. As well as if they'd rather go with Ford's 19" wheel package. Is the 435S an adaptable package? |

New Saleen
I feel there is a niche market for this car, as far as it being a true Saleen or not- I'm sure this car runs great right out of the box and it does have a very sleeper looking body. If you don't like it, SPEND 25K more and buy an SMS model whenever it comes out, IT'S YOUR CHOICE! I think the SPV is a hot rodders SALEEN, and the SMS car is more the businessman's hot rod. But the SPV car will appeal to many because of PRICE and FUNCTIONALITY. Meaning it doesn't have to have all the eye candy to have a whole lot of fun. Isn't that how Mr. Saleen started anyhow?

Wow 79K ouch! Strike the 25K comment anyone for 35K??? If you want exclusivity as it is always been you will have to pay for it. I am curious anyone who seen the 435S at Mustang Week were these numbered cars as all Saleen cars have been?

Numbering
Thanks Greg just curious I wonder how many they plan on making this year or is it going to be a need basis? Should be interesting to see how many sell. The blog on Autoweek seemed to be very favorable of the SPV Mustang also, so we will have to see. I'd love to test drive one. I'm sure it runs well, but the 14" brake upgrade should be a forced option being that there will be a crazy or two who would think the GT brakes are good enough with an S/C installed.

The way that I see it is that you have even MORE options and price levels, to get a very nice car.
Mustang GT=$30,000 (with options, comes closer to, next) 435S=$42,000 (with options, comes closer to, next) Etc,Etc, all the way to $100,000 Just pick your Poison! Eric |

Thanks Jess for the earlier comment. The explanation on the HP drop makes sense. I can even support leaving the exhaust out as the note is a very subjective thing that is easily upgraded to the exhaust of your choice.
Personally, I think subtle badging on a mainly stock exterior car would be better. With only a few items that really stand out, it looks like they were added as an afterthought from another car. I guess I am up to my .10 cents now.

This vehicle will be available in either a Deluxe or Premium package with any of Ford's options. If someone would rather the upgrade Ford wheels we can do that as long as the dealer drop ship the vehicle to us. The same goes with the rear spoiler, if someone wants the upgrade Ford spoiler they can drop ship a car and we will build it up and leave that on it.
This car is supposed to look like the Mustang GT, that is the whole idea. It does not perform like it though. From everything we heard this weekend at Myrtle Beach from Mustang enthusiast's, not just Steve Saleen enthusiast's, people are looking for a vehicle like this. This vehicle is for the buyer to take it and add the parts they want. Many people like multiple parts that are out on the market for these cars and this gives them the opportunity to add those. The exhaust doesn't come standard because so many people take whatever exhaust we put on it and throw it away and add the Ford Racing kit or one of the multiple other popular kits out there. We will offer these things for people to possibly choose or, they can choose to get it from another supplier. Another thing I keep reading is that we just pulled parts off the shelf that were left over from the old company to come out with this, mainly the wheels. Yes these wheels were originally designed for the Heritage vehicles, and then used in this color for the Gurney. I can't tell you any manufacture that puts all that money into tooling for a wheel and then only uses them for a year and a half, so we will continue to offer them. Many people like the look of a dark wheel now, so this is our option for that. If you don't like them don't opt for them. There are thousands of choices for wheels out there right now so you won't please everyone with any wheel you go with. That is the idea though, take it and make it your own. I think we offer a highly competitive package at an extremely reasonable price point, take it or leave it. I know most Steve Saleen fans will leave it and that's fine, he has a car for you I'm sure, please enjoy it! Life is to short for all the badgering and typical negativity that is going on within this entire forum. The whole reason behind joining a club or forum community is to find other people with the same passion behind the product as you, and of course everyone is going to have an opinion but there are much more constructive ways of letting people know what it is other than the typical bashing. But again that's just my opinion right. Sorry to get a little off topic but I can't stand the level of negativity that not just this thread but the entire forum has gone to. Thank you Jess |

And when you go to sell a GT all you have is a GT with some bolt ons, When you go to sell a SALEEN you are selling a Saleen not a GT with bolt ons. I don't think the styling is bad and what I think everyone of forgetting is they are going to release the fully S series car in a couple of month and word is it looks really good. You will get your styling there.
Really I think it is better they have a base car (Sleeper) and a full blown S series car. I have been helping people sell these cars for years and the biggest problem is the person who is not really into Saleens does not understand why they should pay more for an E car when it looks like a standard Saleen. This will help with that.

Yes ALOT of people love Steve and what he did for Saleen but he's not going to be at Saleen. The car warranty issue was out of your hands... it was Hancock Park's doing and it's great that you guys stepped up to cover it.

Sorry dont mean to be bashing just stating my opinions about my disappointment in the new car. The following is not bashing either just trying to figure out where you are going with everything...Thanks
The thread title..."Unmistakably Saleen"...but you just told me you purposely made it look like a regular GT....So which is it? Also you talk about people making it their own by optioning up or adding these wheels or this exhaust...So why would someone buy a saleen at a premium price of $10k for suspension and charger when they could buy the same for hundreds if not thousands cheaper? BTW I cant wait to see the fully done saleen...I am sure it will look great...I have always loved the Saleen styling... Last edited by MeNotYou; 07-27-2009 at 11:52 AM. |

All that I can say about the nay-sayers is, if YOU can add the suspension mods, wheels, embossed seats, stickers/plaque, the super-charger AND tune it WITH a WARRANTY...
go right ahead! I think the base model IS a good deal and an option vs. a standard GT with options. I do ALL of the work on all on my cars, and this IS a deal! Eric |

Jess' comment makes me want to give a brief lesson in sensitivity training...
Certainly even a negative opinion can be expressed in a polite manner, and one doesn't need to use every negative adjective in the dictionary when doing so. It's one thing to toss the salt, but it doesn't always have to be rubbed-in. So for those of you who are finding yourselves having to show some restraint over what can be (for some) a passionate topic, we appreciate that. Those who are having trouble, we would appreciate you trying harder. Our moderation team tries to sit in the background here -- we try to keep an even keel, and find sometimes "new kids on the block" take a little time to settle in; for those, we often take them aside off the forum. If a member of our moderation team contacts you to "tone it down," don't take offense, as we appreciate your participation but we we want to keep this a pleasant environment for everyone. But remember this is our living room and you are a guest. If you feel the need to go ballistic, there are plenty of other places where you can pretty much freely do that (unfortunately). That said, this forum gets a lot of activity so we're likely to get a broad range of opinions on any given topic. This thread at current count has over 1,000 views and 83 replies, so it goes without saying that there are likely going to be a few negative opinions along with the not-so-negative -- or even positive ones. Thanks for listening... |

Jess, I think the price is right and there are a few guys around my neck of the woods already running a Saleen S/C and other parts as sleepers so I think the market segment is there as far as enthusiasts. The only question is how many still have cash to buy a nice car? I am sure there are many. One question on options, can you get the rocker decals deleted? Thanks Jess, you have been a great help to me personally in the past and you are a stand up guy. I appreciate your passion for the cars and your candor with the forum.

Is the 435S not an entry level vehicle and that Saleen is going to unveil the new 2010 "S" series at SEMA? I would think that vehicle would be more comparitive to Steve's SMS recently introduced. Maybe MJ should have brought out the big guns first.

Jess are any of the Saleen dealerships in MI getting any of these cars soon? I wouldnt mind taking a look at one up close.
I think it looks good, At first I really didnt like it too much not as flashy as the previous Saleens are but now its really starting to grow on me more. I like the 5 spoke rims and with a lil drop from the racecraft suspension it sits nicely. It might look a lil more sleaker with a spoiler delete on it. |

Wow!!! For that price, I think it is a bargain. It is definetly a good starting point for anyone who wants to build their own look, they can still put whatever body kit/hood/exhaust on it and not have to pay for those parts twice. It really does have alot of performance goodies and it's not blown out of proportion, and on top of that, you can finance the entire car. It seems like a better option than buying a GT, and putting 10k worth of go fast goodies on a credit card...
I can't wait to see what they come out with next... Maybe a stroked 5L?!?!?! |

Also, if they come in at $40K or below it will be a great deal because a dealer can install the Ford Racing Track Pack and a Blower and it will be about the same price as a Salenn. The Saleen will have better resale value though.... I think it will work.. Roush did something similar to the Racecraft line without a blower and it sold good through the dealers. Slap some Roush stickers, a wing, and wheels and change alot of money.
