Default PJ engine block numbers

I have PJ #384. The number on the engine block (located behind the intake & above the bellhousing on the driverside...can be viewed looking down from the hood hinge area) is # PJ0378.

Why wouldn't they match the engine # to the bumper #?

Do they match on your PJ? If they do, that seems to be a rarity.

Yes, this is an interesting phenomenon.

One would think that it shouldn't be that hard to match engines to cars, but one plausible reason I heard to explain them not matching was to expedite the production process.

In other words the engine number should probably be considered an "internal use only" number.

Tony,

Curiosity got the best of me so I asked Billy Tally, Saleen's former chief technology officer who oversaw the project at the time, and he confirmed that this internal number was not put in plain sight for that reason.

Tally explained, "All of the PJ engines were built and numbered in order of build, in and out of the engine room. The numbers were to keep track of the build sheets -- what parts and measurements on that engine, and had nothing to do with the build of the car itself. As engines were completed they were wheeled out to the line and just installed."

To further clarify, "It would be a luck of the draw that the same engine went back in the car," said Tally. "We had a large pool of engines we started with that never came out of cars, as Ford does not mark the engines to the chassis anymore this really doesn't matter."

If you have a PJ and are simply curious about your engine number, look on the back of the block by the bell housing mount.

We have three with three different numbers stamped on the block- called Saleen and they said - "No problem... that's just how it is!"

Who cares what number is on there... put it on a Dyno or bring it to the track for a real number.

I was at Irvine when they built these cars. I was told that they would bring the car onto the assembly line, remove the front, hood, and other body parts, then remove the motor. Since the engine work would take a few days, they take a completed motor pulled from a different car a few days earlier, and that would go into what was on the line. The motor removed would undergo the necessary engine work and once completed, would go into a car on the line a few days after the car it was pulled from. That's just what I was told when I was there.

that is completely what happened. within a couple of hours the engine would be out of the car and a new one would go in. as for engine stamping, that was purely for proper engine documentation, not bumper #s.
