Default Registry: 1990 Deep Emerald Green Saleens

Today I had the opportunity to view a private collection of fox bodied mustangs. Within this group of cars was Saleen #90-0010. The car is a deep emerald green convertible with white top and white interior. It is an automatic and has a Paxton Supercharger installed by Saleen.

The car has 80 original miles. That's right, 80. The window sticker is still on the passenger window. Once I receive permission to post pictures I will put them up.

Default 90 Saleen Mustang - 7 UP Car

Read the post - and assume this is Bruce Weiss's (sp) car that was in Mustang Monthly in the 90's? After reading the post, I went out to my garage and looked at 90-140 - the one I purchased on Mary 14, 1990. I think 90-010 is the first 7 Up car, and believe mine is the 3rd - but don't quote me on that.

While my car has been driven a fair amount I still love the way it looks and love driving it. Original paint, top, interior - and the valve covers have never been off - still runs great. Still an awesome car -

Your note reminds me how lucky I am -

Bob

Sounds like the Carpenter collection. I believe Mark had it on his site for sale quite a few years ago.

Bob -

Didn't know that - interesting. I'd like to know how many of these cars are left. I personally know of: 010, 140,141, 217 -

I understand there were 11-12 of them. Anybody know of other 7UP Saleens?

Bob

Thought there was an article in Mustang Monthly about Daniel Carpenters collection. He has some real nice low mileage foxbodies.

You are correct sir, Daniel Carpenters collection it was. It is very impressive. The lowest mile car in the collection is a white 86 SVO...

4 original miles. Other notables include a 93 Cobra "R" with 29 miles, an 83 GLX with 6 miles and an 86 GT which was never dealer prepped with 37 miles, to name just a few. I took pictures (with my phone) of every car. Just waiting for permission to post them.

All - so we should call out the car numbers that we know: Car # 90-10, 90-140, 90-141, 90-173, 90-217

Are we aware of any other car numbers?

Not definitive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
90-0152 appears to be the 1st and 90-0010 appears to be the last.
Valstrough Ford & Bleakley Ford were repeat offenders in ordering Emerald Green Saleens.
The Greg Wackett archives does have a 1990 Saleen sales letter to dealers stating they had Emerald Green Mustangs ready for conversion. So, this would appear not every Green 1990 was a special order drop ship car. There may have been a small pool ordered by Saleen Autosport.
The owner of 91-0095 has been contacted, and by all indications, this car will be at the SCOA Nationals this year. Car has a very interesting history to say the least. By the way, this car was sold at Bleakley Ford.
Default New owner of an Emerald Green car
Hello Everyone,
Wanted to introduce myself as yesterday I purchased one of the original "7UP" Saleens #90-178 out of a garage a couple blocks from my parents house. Car is in great original condition and was put into storage with only 10,700 miles on the odometer. If anyone has more info on this car, purchased at Val Strough, I would appreciate it. Looking forward to getting it detailed and back on the road!
Thanks!
Reid
Default 7up car #178
Morning Reid -
Congratulations on your new acquisition. I know of your car, because I purchased mine (#140) on Val Strough as well.
The original owner was a fellow stationed at Fort Ord (Monterey) - my wife and I saw him occasionally in the Monterey area while he was stationed there..
I still have mine, and while well driven, it is in excellent shape. Hope to see you at an upcoming event.
Take care,
Bob
Congratulations Reid! Looks like a great purchase. When our weather clears up, we should meet in Santa Cruz at the 41st Ave Cars and Coffee.
Were the 7ups built in California or at Cars and Concepts?
This production run were likely assembled in either Anaheim or Riverside California. From a quick check of known data... I would say without certainty no 1990 green convertibles were assembled in St. Louis.
Saleen Autosport did send a dealer announcement in the spring of 1990 saying they had a limited quantity of available Emerald Green LX convertibles for conversion. So, it would appear some of these cars were created from the Saleen pool of Mustangs and not dealer inventory or special orders.
Default 7UP - Where were they built?
All -
I hope this information helps.
When I acquired my car in May of 1990 (original owner) - I wrote a letter to Saleen asking for clarification on this issue. I have a letter from Liz Summar dated 11/2/1990 stating that my car (not sure about others - note below), was built in Dearborn, shipped to Cars and Concepts and then back to Dearborn for final inspection before shipping to Saleen's plant.
She also states "Beginning next week, the Saleen Mustangs will be produced at our new plant in Saint Louis, MO."
In that letter, Liz was good enough to send me the production work order for my car which includes all of the quality checks, and code verifications for my car. It is dated 5/2/1990. My wife and I purchased it on 5/21/1990 at Val Strough - right here in Monterey.
Based on this, it could be possible that the cars could have been built in multiple locations based on build timing. But....I would have thought they were built during a tight timing window. Not sure.
Anyway, like all things - each car has a slightly different story. So let's add to this thread - what sequence were these cars built - and what location? Does anyone know? Who else has their production work order?
Have fun and be safe,
Bob
If my memory is correct, Cars and Concepts in Michigan did the 1983 Mustang convertible conversions and became the convertible top installer from 1984 through 1993 once FMC built convertibles bodies in-house, but did not install tops.
Cars and Concepts Missouri produced standard Saleen Mustangs from late 1990 through 1991.
Most of the Emerald convertibles were produced during April and May of 1990.
Quick & sloppy order:
90-0152
90-0140
90-0165
90-0141
90-0173
90-0179
90-0178
90-0142
90-0186
90-0090
90-0195
90-0217
90-0010
90-0195 was damaged and scrapped in 1990.
So, most everyone would have a 17 digit vin on their Saleen under-hood plate?
The California built cars have 6 digits stamped on the plate.
Thanks,
Craig
Hello all, glad I found this thread.
My father actually owns 90-195. The car was stolen off a new dealer lot in VA in 1990. Bill Fox, a Mustang rebuilder out of PA, rebuilt the car to stock LX specs, and my father purchased it in 1991.
We immediately returned the car to full Saleen specs, it currently has around 9500 miles. Nice to see these cars are being tracked down.
